One of the most common questions expecting parents ask is:

“When should I book my newborn photographer?”

The short answer? Earlier than you think.

Most families begin searching for a newborn photographer once they enter their second trimester, and for good reason. Newborn photography sessions happen within a very small window after birth, and photographers often book months in advance, especially during busy baby seasons in spring, summer, and fall.

As a lifestyle newborn and Fresh 48 photographer in Thornton, Colorado serving the Denver metro area, I always recommend reaching out during your second trimester to ensure availability around your due date. However, it is never too late. I myself decided last minute to get newborn pictures done AFTER my son was born. I will always do my best to fit you in and help you capture these moments.

Why Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer Early?

Your baby’s first days are incredibly fleeting.

Those tiny curled-up stretches, sleepy snuggles, flaky skin, and newborn expressions change almost overnight. By the time most parents feel settled after birth, their baby has already grown and changed in ways they never expected.

Booking your newborn photographer early allows you to:

  • Secure availability around your due date
  • Have time to plan outfits and session details
  • Avoid the stress of last-minute scheduling postpartum
  • Feel confident knowing these memories are already taken care of

Most newborn photographers only accept a limited number of due dates each month to allow flexibility for babies arriving early or late.

When Is the Best Time for Newborn Photos?

This depends on the type of session you’re looking for.

Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

Lifestyle newborn sessions are typically done within the first 1–3 weeks after birth. Unlike posed studio sessions, lifestyle photography focuses on connection, emotion, and authentic moments in the comfort of your home.

That flexibility means there’s no pressure if recovery takes longer or your family needs extra time to settle in.

That said, there’s something incredibly special about photographing babies during those earliest days while they’re still tiny, sleepy, and adjusting to life earthside.

Lifestyle Newborn Sessions - Little Lens Studios

Fresh 48 Sessions

Fresh 48 sessions take place within the first 24–48 hours after birth, usually in your hospital room, birthing center, or home birth setting.

These sessions document the raw, emotional beauty of your baby’s very first hours, the wrinkly skin, hospital bracelets, tiny yawns, and overwhelming love that fills the room.

Because Fresh 48 sessions happen so quickly after delivery, it’s especially important to book these during pregnancy to ensure availability.

What Happens If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

Don’t worry; babies rarely follow a perfect schedule.

When you book your newborn session, I reserve space around your estimated due date rather than scheduling an exact session day immediately. Once your little one arrives, we’ll finalize the exact timing together.

Whether your baby comes two weeks early or decides to stay cozy a little longer, I build flexibility into my calendar specifically for newborn families.

Is It Too Late to Book After Baby Is Born?

Absolutely not.

While booking during pregnancy is ideal, I understand life gets busy and many parents don’t begin thinking about photos until after their baby arrives. Whenever possible, I do my best to accommodate last-minute newborn and Fresh 48 inquiries throughout the Denver metro area.

Even if your baby is already several weeks old, beautiful and meaningful photos are still absolutely possible.

The truth is: there is never a wrong time to document your family.

What If I’m Nervous About Doing Photos at Home?

This is one of the biggest concerns I hear from new parents, and I promise you do not need a perfectly curated home for beautiful photos.

Lifestyle newborn photography is about documenting connection, not perfection.

The best sessions happen in spaces where your family naturally feels comfortable: cuddled on your bed, rocking your baby in the nursery, or soaking in quiet moments together on the couch.

I’ll gently guide you throughout the session while keeping everything relaxed, natural, and baby-led.
