What You Actually Need for Your Baby's First 48 Hours

If you're planning a Fresh 48 photography session, you may already be wondering what you should pack in your hospital bag, and whether you need to bring anything specifically for your photos.

The good news?

Not much.

A Fresh 48 session is intentionally simple. These photographs are about your baby's first hours of life, your family adjusting to this incredible new chapter, and all of those tiny details that will change before you know it.

You don't need a suitcase full of props, elaborate outfits, or anything complicated. In fact, some of the most meaningful Fresh 48 photographs happen with nothing more than your baby wrapped in a hospital blanket, tiny fingers tucked against your chest, and your family simply being together.

As a Thornton Fresh 48 photographer, my goal is to make your experience as relaxed and effortless as possible. You're recovering, bonding with your baby, learning your new rhythm, and probably running on very little sleep. The last thing I want is for photography to feel like another thing you have to prepare for.

So let's keep it simple.

Do I Need to Pack Anything Special for Fresh 48 Photos?

No.

You are already going to have most of what you need with you at the hospital or birth center.

Your baby's hospital blanket, diaper, hospital hat, tiny hospital bracelet, and even the little details that come with those first hours can all become meaningful parts of your photographs.

These details are part of your baby's beginning.

There's something incredibly special about looking back at those first photographs and seeing exactly how small your baby was, what they wore, and what those first days looked like.

You don't need to recreate a studio newborn session in your hospital room.

Your baby's first 48 hours are already beautiful.

What Should My Baby Wear?

This is probably the easiest part.

Your baby can wear:

  • A simple neutral swaddle
  • A plain or knit outfit
  • A simple diaper
  • A hospital blanket
  • The hospital hat
  • Nothing at all

There is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping your baby wrapped in the blanket provided by the hospital.

In fact, I love incorporating those blankets into Fresh 48 photographs because they tell part of your baby's story.

If you want something a little more personalized, a neutral swaddle or simple knit outfit is a beautiful option.

I also bring one or two simple, neutral options with me, such as a swaddle or basic baby clothing, so you don't have to worry about remembering everything.

The focus is never on what your baby is wearing.

It's on your baby.

What Should Mom Wear for Fresh 48 Photos?

First and foremost, wear what makes you feel comfortable. You have just given birth. You are healing, adjusting, and spending some of the most emotionally significant hours of your life with your new baby.

You do not need to dress like you're going to a photoshoot.

Some popular options include:

A Hospital or Birthing Gown

If you love the idea of documenting those early postpartum details, your hospital gown is completely appropriate.

It tells the story exactly as it happened.

A Button-Up Pajama Set

A comfortable pajama set can look beautiful while still feeling like you.

Button-up tops are especially convenient if you're nursing.

A Simple Robe

A soft robe can provide comfort and flexibility while still creating beautiful, timeless photographs.

A Comfortable Dress

If you're feeling up to getting dressed, a loose, lightweight dress can be a beautiful choice.

Soft neutrals, creams, earth tones, and muted colors photograph especially well.

But there is no requirement to dress a certain way.

Comfort comes first. Always.

What Should My Partner Wear?

Keep it simple.

A comfortable T-shirt, henley, sweater, button-up shirt, or neutral loungewear can all work beautifully.

I generally recommend avoiding large logos, neon colors, or extremely busy patterns because they can pull attention away from the connection between your family.

Neutral colors like:

  • Cream
  • Beige
  • White
  • Gray
  • Brown
  • Soft blue
  • Muted green
  • Black

are all timeless choices.

You don't need everyone to match.

Instead, think about coordinating.

Soft, complementary colors create a cohesive gallery without making everyone look like they're wearing uniforms.

What Should Siblings Wear?

If an older sibling is joining your Fresh 48 session, comfort is still the priority.

Simple pajamas, a neutral outfit, or whatever they normally wear can be perfect.

Remember that siblings are meeting a brand-new member of their family in the middle of a completely unfamiliar environment.

  • They may be excited.
  • They may be shy.
  • They may want to participate.
  • They may want absolutely nothing to do with the baby.
  • All of it is normal.

I don't expect siblings to sit perfectly still or pose on command.

We'll follow their lead and capture their relationship with the newest member of your family naturally.

Do I Need to Bring Props?

Absolutely not.

Fresh 48 photography is different from a traditional posed newborn session.

You don't need:

  • Large props
  • Baskets
  • Elaborate backdrops
  • Complicated outfits
  • Decorative setups
  • A huge collection of baby accessories

Your hospital room, your baby, your family, and the details surrounding those first hours are enough.

I want your Fresh 48 photographs to look and feel like your baby's actual beginning, not a staged recreation.

What About Personal Items?

If there are meaningful items you'd like included, absolutely bring them.

Some ideas include:

  • A special baby blanket
  • A family heirloom
  • A personalized swaddle
  • A meaningful stuffed animal
  • A hospital keepsake
  • A birth announcement
  • A special piece of jewelry
  • A letter written to your baby

You don't need to bring these things just for the sake of having something in the photographs.

But if there is an object that already carries meaning for your family, incorporating it can add another layer to your story.

What About My Hospital Bag?

Your regular hospital bag is more important than anything you bring for photographs.

Think about what will make you comfortable.

You may want:

  • Comfortable clothes for postpartum
  • Toiletries
  • Nursing or pumping supplies if needed
  • Phone charger
  • Snacks
  • Comfortable shoes or slippers
  • Baby essentials

Any personal items recommended by your care team.

Your Fresh 48 photography needs can be incredibly simple.

In many cases, everything we need is already in the room.

What About Hospital Blankets?

Please use them!

There is something so special about seeing your newborn wrapped in the same hospital blanket they wore during those first hours.

Hospital blankets, hats, bracelets, and other little details are part of the story.

Years from now, you may not remember exactly what the hospital room looked like.

But seeing that tiny baby wrapped in that familiar blanket can bring you right back.

Those ordinary details become extraordinary with time.

What If I Forget Something?

Don't worry.

You just had a baby.

Seriously.

There is no perfect Fresh 48 packing list, and forgetting something for photographs is not going to ruin your session.

  • If you forget the swaddle, we'll use the hospital blanket
  • If you don't have a special outfit, that's okay
  • If you don't feel like getting dressed, we can work with that
  • If your baby needs to eat, we'll pause
  • If your baby needs a diaper change, we'll pause
  • If you need to rest, we'll pause

Your family comes first. The photographs come second.

Your Baby Sets the Pace

A Fresh 48 session typically lasts under an hour, allowing us to document these early moments without adding unnecessary stress to your hospital stay.

I coordinate with you and, when appropriate, your baby's nursing team so the session fits around your care, recovery, and baby's needs.

Your baby may sleep through the entire session

They may be wide awake

They may need to eat

They may need to be changed

They may decide that being photographed is absolutely not on their agenda

That's okay.

Your baby is in charge.

We'll follow their cues and let the session unfold naturally.

What If My Baby Needs Extra Medical Care?

If your baby requires additional care from NICU staff or other medical professionals, you don't necessarily have to give up on documenting these first moments.

With my background as an EMT with NICU experience, I am comfortable working around medical equipment and within a hospital environment.

I will always work closely with your baby's nurses and care team and respect any restrictions or instructions they provide.

Your baby's health and safety will always come before photography.

And if you decide that you don't want your NICU experience photographed, that is completely okay too.

There is no right or wrong way to document this chapter.

The Most Important Thing to Bring?

Yourself.

  • Bring your love
  • Bring your exhaustion
  • Bring the excitement
  • Bring the uncertainty
  • Bring all of the emotions that come with becoming a parent, or becoming a parent again
  • You don't need to arrive perfectly prepared
  • You don't need to have everything figured out
  • You certainly don't need to look like you just stepped out of a magazine
  • You're in the middle of one of the biggest transitions of your life

That's exactly what makes these photographs so meaningful.

What I Bring to Your Fresh 48 Session

While you don't need to bring much specifically for your photography session, I come prepared to make the experience as easy as possible.

I'll bring:

  • My photography equipment
  • A couple of neutral swaddles
  • Simple baby clothing options
  • My experience working around newborns and hospital environments
  • A calm, flexible approach
  • Guidance throughout the session

Most importantly, I bring the understanding that these first hours are about you and your baby; not creating a perfect photoshoot.

Your Fresh 48 Session Should Feel Simple

The first 48 hours with your baby are already full.

There are nurses coming in and out.

  • Feedings
  • Diaper changes
  • Visitors
  • Phone calls
  • Paperwork
  • Newborn assessments

And a whole lot of staring at your baby wondering how someone so tiny can already mean so much.

Your photography session shouldn't add to that chaos.

It should give you a chance to slow down for a little while and preserve the details you'll someday wish you could revisit.

So if you're wondering what to pack for your Fresh 48 session, remember:

A neutral swaddle is enough.

A simple outfit is enough.

The hospital blanket is enough.

Your baby is enough.

And most importantly—

your love is enough.
