One of the biggest concerns parents have before booking an in-home newborn session is surprisingly simple:

“What if my house isn’t ready?”

Let me reassure you right away; you do not need a perfectly designed home or spotless space to have beautiful newborn photos.

Lifestyle newborn photography is not about perfection. It’s about connection, emotion, and documenting your family exactly as you are during this fleeting season of life.

As a lifestyle newborn photographer in Thornton, Colorado serving Denver and surrounding areas, I specialize in creating relaxed, natural newborn sessions that feel stress-free and authentic. My goal is to capture the beauty already present in your everyday moments, not create unrealistic expectations during one of the busiest transitions of your life.

If you’re wondering how to prepare your home for an in-home newborn session, here’s everything you need to know.

You Do NOT Need a Perfect Home

This is the most important thing I want every parent to hear. Your home does not need to look like a magazine.

Your baby will not remember whether dishes were in the sink or laundry baskets were tucked in the corner. What matters most are the moments we’re capturing:

  • Tiny fingers wrapped around yours
  • The way you rock your baby near the nursery window
  • Siblings snuggled together on the couch
  • Quiet moments in the place your family calls home

Some of the most meaningful newborn galleries I’ve ever photographed happened in homes parents worried were “too small,” “too dark,” or “not clean enough.”

I promise: your love is what makes the images beautiful.

Open the Curtains & Let in Natural Light

Lifestyle newborn photography relies heavily on natural light.

Before your session, I recommend opening blinds and curtains throughout the home to allow as much soft window light in as possible. Turn off all overhead lights as they clash with the beautiful natural light. Homes do not need huge windows to create beautiful images—even a small amount of natural light can work wonderfully.

The rooms we most commonly use during newborn sessions are:

  • Master bedroom
  • Nursery
  • Living room

These spaces usually hold the most emotional connection and the best natural light.

Focus on Decluttering, Not Deep Cleaning

Please do not spend your newborn stage stress-cleaning your house.

Instead of trying to deep clean every inch of your home, simply focus on lightly decluttering the areas we’ll likely photograph in.

A few quick things that help:

  • Clear bedside tables
  • Remove extra cords or chargers
  • Tuck away laundry baskets
  • Simplify countertops if desired

That’s truly enough.

I can also gently move small items during the session if needed. Most of the time, tiny adjustments make a huge difference in photos.

Keep Baby Comfortable

The best newborn sessions happen when everyone feels calm and comfortable.

I always recommend:

  • Feeding baby shortly before the session if possible
  • Dressing baby in simple, easy-to-remove clothing
  • Keeping the home slightly warmer than usual for comfort
  • Allowing flexibility throughout the session

And most importantly? There is absolutely no pressure for your baby to “perform.”

Your little one leads the entire session.

Whether they need feeding breaks, diaper changes, cuddles, or extra soothing, we simply pause and follow their rhythm naturally.

Can Pets & Siblings Be Included?

Absolutely!

Your growing family includes everyone who loves your baby. Whether that means excited toddlers, shy siblings, or the family dog wanting to stay close, I always encourage including the people (and pets) that make your family unique.

The beauty of in-home sessions is that children tend to feel more relaxed and comfortable in their own environment, allowing moments to unfold naturally and authentically.

Don’t Stress About “Perfect” Behavior

This is one of the biggest fears parents carry into sessions and I promise you, I am not judging and you can relax.

Toddlers may need snack breaks. Babies may cry. Parents may feel tired. That’s normal and expected.

Some of the most emotional, beautiful images come from imperfect in-between moments:

  • Rocking a crying baby
  • Laughing through toddler chaos
  • Quietly comforting one another

Your session is not about perfection. It’s about remembering what this season truly felt like.
